Ricalcola (https://ricalcola.app) is a spaced-repetition learning platform operated by LayerGarden (individual developer project). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our service.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following information when you create an account and use Ricalcola:
- Account information: Email address and display name, provided either through Google Sign-In or email registration.
- Study progress and learning data: Your flashcard review history, answer accuracy, review timestamps, and FSRS scheduling parameters — all used to optimise your learning schedule.
- Course enrollment and completion history: Which academy courses you have enrolled in, your progress within each course, and completion status.
- Authentication data: Hashed passwords (for email-based accounts) or OAuth tokens (for Google Sign-In). We never store your Google password.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Providing the learning service: Delivering spaced-repetition flashcard reviews, tracking your study sessions, and displaying your progress.
- Scheduling reviews: Using the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm to calculate optimal review intervals based on your performance history.
- Transactional communications: Sending account verification emails and password reset links when you request them.
- Service improvement: Analysing aggregate, anonymised usage patterns to improve the FSRS scheduling algorithm and overall user experience. We do not build individual advertising profiles.
3. Information Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal data to third parties.
Your data is shared only with the following service providers, solely for the purpose of operating Ricalcola:
- Google: If you choose to sign in with Google, we exchange OAuth tokens with Google's authentication servers. Google receives only what is necessary for the sign-in flow. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Email service provider: We use the Gmail API to send transactional emails (verification and password resets). Your email address is shared with Google's email infrastructure solely for delivery.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Location: Your data is stored on servers located in the European Union (DigitalOcean, London region).
- Encryption: Data is encrypted at rest on our servers and in transit via TLS (HTTPS).
- Access control: Access to production data is restricted to the project operator and is protected by SSH key authentication and firewall rules.
5. Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: You may request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
- Export: You may request an export of your study data in a portable format.
- Deletion: You may delete your account at any time from within the app. You may also request complete data deletion by contacting us. Upon deletion, all your personal data, study history, and account information will be permanently removed from our servers within 30 days.
- Rectification: You may update your display name and email address from your account settings.
To exercise these rights, email us at privacy@ricalcola.app.
6. Cookies and Local Storage
Ricalcola uses minimal cookies:
- Session token: A single authentication cookie to keep you signed in. This is essential for the service to function and cannot be disabled.
- No tracking cookies: We do not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers, or third-party tracking pixels.
7. Third-Party Services
Ricalcola integrates with the following third-party service:
- Google Sign-In: Allows you to authenticate using your Google account. When you use Google Sign-In, Google may collect data according to their own privacy policy. See Google's Privacy Policy.
8. Children's Privacy
Ricalcola is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at privacy@ricalcola.app and we will promptly delete it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify users through the Ricalcola app before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was most recently revised.
